(Nashville, Tenn. – October 14, 2014) – Emma, a provider of best-in-class email marketing software and services, today announces the appointment of industry veteran Michael Downs as its director of sales. With more than 12 years of experience within the marketing technology space, Downs joins Emma from Silverpop, an IBM company.
As director of sales, Downs will oversee strategic growth in new markets, leading outbound sales efforts and managing every aspect of in-market business development. He’ll hire, train and manage the team of sales people aimed at introducing businesses to Emma’s scalable, streamlined set of marketing tools and hands-on services. Downs will report to Emma's VP of Sales, Christopher Lester.
Downs joins the team on the heels of a very active summer for Emma, during which the company hired former Responsys VP Simon O’Day as its VP of Global and released new data-related features aimed at helping customers glean new insights from their email marketing. Emma released a new version of its popular Metric app for iPhone, expanded its social media insights (currently in beta), and more recently unveiled a brand-new client dashboard for its agency and franchise partners. These new features were built on Emma's new event-driven architecture, which powers Emma's data collection, data visualization and trigger events for automation.
“Larger companies are realizing that Emma can help their marketing teams do more with a streamlined set of creative and contact management tools, plus insights that make it easy to know what’s working with their audience, and what to do next,” said Clint Smith, Emma’s CEO and co-founder. “Michael has seen both sides of that story, and we're excited to have him share that expertise with our in-house team as well as our future customers."
Prior to Emma, Downs served as regional sales manager, corporate accounts at Silverpop, an IBM company. During his tenure, he was responsible for developing new business for Silverpop’s flagship marketing automation platform, Engage. Downs tapped his extensive marketing experience to help other digital marketers develop and implement successful strategies. Downs was actively involved in regional marketing associations and networking groups, serving on the sponsorship committee for the Puget Sound American Marketing Association and conducting numerous speaking engagements, presentations and workshops on various marketing topics.
“Emma’s product and service offerings make a ton of sense for any company trying to get more out of their marketing dollar,” said Downs. “I’ve seen how complicated enterprise solutions can get in the way of marketers who want to react quickly to their customers and leads with valuable content, and now I get the pleasure of introducing them to a better solution.”
Mr. Downs’ addition to Emma’s leadership team is the most recent development in the company’s string of strategic additions to its team. Emma is expected to grow their staff by 50 percent in the calendar year 2014.
