Talk with Tom, won’t you?

Getting involved with a social media experiment

We're sponsoring a social media experiment called Talking with Tom, and we'd love for you to help decide who gets the last word.

This past January, Emma became chummy with a fella named Tom Martin hailing from one of my favorite cities, New Orleans, Louisiana. Tom is a social media consultant and digital marketing specialist who writes, speaks and helps clients by demystifying the digital marketing landscape at Converse Digital. His current project, Talking with Tom, really got our attention at Emma for a few reasons.

Tom’s experiment
Tom is a believer in content marketing. A brand can strengthen customer relationships and develop high quality leads by providing relevant content that establishes you or your company as an expert or influencer in your field. You may have noticed a lot of buzz lately about content marketing. Truth is, email marketing is and always has been a medium that requires lots of planning, strategy and creativity to keep your readers interested. There are just a lot more ways these days to distribute and draw attention to your content.

Our customers often tell us that creating content is one of their biggest marketing hurdles. Many people assume creating compelling content requires a team of people, deep pockets and tons of time. And sometimes, it does. But we think Tom may be on to one way to simplify that process and, dare we say, even have fun creating content. Tom is proving that it can be done with a great idea, an iPhone, easy-to-use online software and a simple plan for spreading the word.

Emma’s involvement
And why was Emma compelled to sponsor Tom’s project, you ask? Good question. Along with a healthy curiosity in hearing answers from a rather impressive list of experts to Tom’s question: “What’s next {in digital media}?,” we like Tom’s message. We wanted to help him prove that he could create interesting content and get results by using technology available to businesses of every size. Also, Tom is an influencer and subject matter expert, so we’d like to see if having brand association with him will give our own brand more exposure.

What’s next … your turn
Tom has some exciting interviews still in the pipeline. I’m so tempted to name-drop here, but I won’t risk being the WikiLeaks of the Talking with Tom project. Suffice it to say, you’re going to be interested in hearing from these experts. We’ll also be checking in with you along the way to get some thoughts from you as the project unfolds. In fact, we could use your thoughts right about now. Tom did a great job of plotting out his influential interviewees, but we just couldn’t help asking him how influential he’s willing to get. We drew up our own little dream list of possible interviewees for a 53rd bonus interview, and Tom agreed to land the interview with the personality *you* choose.

So you get to help us choose who gets the #LastWord on What’s Next? by voting now.

You also might want to visit the Talking with Tom site and spend some time with the 28 interviews he’s already posted (they’re around two minutes each). Stay tuned to the project by checking back here on the Emma blog, following @TomMartin and @EmmaEmail on Twitter, and subscribing to the Talking with Tom email list.

The next six months will be exciting. Almost as exciting as being able to call Tom our new friend.

And go ahead … vote now!

Email marketing awards, meet the conga. No, seriously.

If you think there’s no place in the business world to “shake your body baby, do that conga,” then you clearly did not attend the MarketingSherpa Email Awards Gala Party this past March in Miami. Successful email marketers from around the globe gathered at Gloria Estefan’s downtown Miami restaurant, Bongos, to acknowledge email campaigns in categories such as best retail promotion, best email newsletter and best B-to-B campaign (to name a few). The mojitos flowed freely and everyone could feel the rhythm of the music getting stronger. Okay, I promise no more Gloria lyrics.

Don’t miss your opportunity to conga be honored at the 2008 awards. The deadline for submissions is January 11, 2008 and the campaign should be one you sent in 2007. All you need to do is submit a campaign you’re particularly proud of. Of course, proud is defined by amazing results – you sold a lot of stuff or got a ton of click throughs, for example. For more details on the criteria and to submit your campaign, hop over to the MarketingSherpa site. And ask us if you have questions or need a little help. We know there are hundreds, maybe even thousands, of you Emma users out there with award-worthy campaigns. How ’bout a little recognition and a mojito (or two?). I know you can’t control yourself any longer.

Okay, sorry about that last one. I couldn’t resist.

Emma in the Windy City

During the last week of August, temperatures topped 102 degrees in our home city of Nashville. No better time to head north, eh? Steve Turney, Emma’s Manager of Agency Sales, and I headed up to Chicago to greet some existing friends of Emma, make new ones and impart some wisdom about our industry’s best practices to a group from AIGA Chicago. Low 80′s, here we come!

That evening we held an Emma Social Hour at the swanky Martini Park. Our social hour is all about meeting our Emma fans and customers face to face. That, and cocktails. We had the great pleasure of meeting the crew from Jacobs & Clevenger – one of Emma’s earliest agency clients. Looks like Megan is enjoying the Pineapple Navan Martini. Megan, we strongly recommend you try the Strawberry Basil Martini on your next visit.

Kim & Jeannie

The next evening we headed to the Chicago Art Institute to present Email by Design for 60 members of the Chicago chapter of AIGA. There were questions about building permission based lists, creating eye catching content *above the fold* and how to interpret bounces. It was this email marketing nerd’s paradise.

My very favorite part of my time in the windy city was Sunday afternoon. I headed to the Chicago Antique Market, which just happened to be walking distance from the Greek Town festival where I had lunch. According to one friendly Chicagoan, there are more street festivals there from May to September than anywhere else in the world. I can’t prove it, but I digress. On my stroll down the street to discover the treasures of antiquity that might await me, I passed the restaurant Saltaus. What a coincidence. They’re an Emma customer. It’s über-hip, which means they don’t serve people until the sun goes down, but I took my chances by knocking on the door. I had the great pleasure of meeting the proprietor, Nader:

Saltaus

Nader pointed out to me, after a VIP tour of his restaurant, that the ladies next door referred him to Emma. Turns out another Chicago area customer, Bespoke Cuisine, was right next door. I had to go say hi. Here are the owners, Kim and Jeannie. I should also mention here that Jeannie is a founding board member of The Porchlight Music Theater who also uses Emma to keep in touch with patrons and fans.

Kim & Jeannie
So, move over Kevin Bacon. There’s a new game in town – six degrees to Emma. It seems these days a gal can’t stroll down the street without happening across a friend of Emma. And that beats any antique treasure every time.
